Prosthes

Prosthes

The term dental prosthesis refers to artificial tooth or teeth replacements. These prostheses can range from simple caps that help repair a single tooth, to full dental prostheses that are intended to replace every tooth, commonly known as dentures.

Dental prosthesis are used by dentists for cosmetic as well as medical reasons. Patients needing prostheses can undergo difficulties with their bite, as well as dealing with issues of shame due to tooth loss and their physical appearance.

Caps or Partial Tooth Prostheses

When a tooth is broken or damaged, but the root is still intact, a cap or partial tooth prosthesis may be recommended by a dentist. In this procedure, any damaged area is removed and a small stub is left that contains the root of the original tooth. An enamel cap is then fitted over that stub.

Caps will generally last fifteen years with proper care, but they may break over time. Patient’s with caps typically do not have any difficulties with their bite and will eventually stop noticing it is there.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a new type of dental prosthesis. A titanium rod is fitted into the patient’s jaw and a new “tooth” is created out of enamel and placed onto this rod. Patients who are missing only a few teeth, or who are missing teeth in the front of their bite may elect for this procedure.

While costly, dental implants do not need to removed for cleaning and generally recreate the lost tooth so that it is impossible to tell that any cosmetic dentistry was done.

Dental Plates

  • These dental prostheses are commonly referred to as partial dentures or plates. When a patient is missing several teeth on one side, or needs to have several teeth removed, a dental plate is commonly recommended by a dentist. This helps reduce difficulties with alignment of the patient’s bite that would be present if the teeth were simply removed and not replaced.

A dental plate is designed to fit in where the missing teeth are and will require several visits to fit. The patient’s current bite will be assessed, and an impression is taken to determine how large the plate should be. Once this is determined, the patient is fitted with their dental plate. Typically, these plates do not need to be removed once they are installed and function just like teeth.

Dentures

Dentures are a type of dental prosthesis that are used when numerous teeth on the upper or lower bite

The procedure for fitting dentures is very similar to denture plates. An impression is taken of the patient’s bite, and dentures are built to fit. The dentist will then install the new dental prosthesis and instruct the patient on proper cleaning and care.

need to be replaced. They are typically available in either uppers or lowers and some patients may require both. Also referred to as false teeth, these dental prostheses are removable and will need to be cleaned and re-adhered daily by the patient.
